Beautiful, Beautiful: Nothing is wasted

“Incredibly moving.”

RICE O.

Everyone has experienced disappointment and pain after a daring initiative — a failed business venture, a broken relationship, a bewildering season of ministry or mission work. It’s heartbreaking. We ask, was it worth the risk?

Three New Testament authors tell the story of Mary, who anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume and wiped them with her hair (Matt. 26, Mark 14, John 12). The reaction of the onlookers is, “Why this waste?” The reaction of Jesus is, “She has done a beautiful thing to me.”

What if these losses are more than just casualties of life in a fallen world? What if there is more to the story?

“I love the whole story, the overarching narrative…”

Music is a powerful vehicle for these deep questions to penetrate what we know we “should” believe and get to the heart of shared experience. Individually, we feel discouraged and alone. Through songs and stories of those with similar experiences, we get a glimpse of a glorious tapestry that weaves all around and through us.

These songs have inspired and motivated perseverance in the same spirit of love, creativity and peacemaking that moved us to act in the first place.

Let’s explore these themes together. I invite you to hear my story and follow my journey thus far, rediscovering faith, freedom and how beauty emerges in its own time.

Maybe together we can get a glimpse of Jesus’ perspective; what feels wasted in your life and work? Can it be redeemed? Even called beautiful?

“Cortney Matz weaves together personal storytelling and a soaring voice to create an inviting atmosphere for audiences to share the high and lows of their journey.”

ABOUT CORTNEY:

I was born in Washington, DC to God-fearing parents serving in the U.S. Navy. Growing up, our travels acquainted me with a range of church denominations and theologies, from Baptist to Christian Missionary Alliance, to Presbyterian, to a variety of non-denominational churches.

Everywhere we went, I found people who loved one another and who pointed me to Jesus.

Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2013, my life in the entertainment industry has given me plenty of reasons to pray and reflect.

I’ve seen miracles and I’ve faced disappointments. I’ve remained active in my local church (Ecclesia Hollywood), while pursuing community among fellow creative entrepreneurs through my work at Epiphany Space.

By the grace of God, my faith is stronger than ever and I continue encouraging his people to go boldly into the world and love it as much as he does.
